Built between 1244 and 1224 BC, the great temple of RamsesII at Abu-Simbel lies in the middle of the Nubian desert, a considerable drive from the nearest city, Aswan. When discovered around 1813, the temple was found buried in the sand with only its top frieze visible. It was transplanted piece by piece and reassembled at its current location, 65 m higher and 200 m further, to avoid submergence with the construction of Lake Nasser.
