This is actually a much older temple than the Angkor, and much better restored. It is also unique in that it wasn't created by a monarch, but by a courtier named Yajnavaraha, counsellor to king Rajedravarman. Built in the 10th century out of red sandstone and dedicated to Shiva, the elaborate wall carvings showcase the very epitome of Khmer art that has earned the sobriquet -- citadel of women or citadel of beauty, Banteay Srei.
