Built originally as fortifications in 1220 AD, the castle was rebuilt by the McCarthy clan and has been a medieval stronghold since the mid 15th century. The heavy rain in Ireland has led to severe ruin, but the castle is still a popular destination, especially for its famed Blarney stone set in its machicolations, and reputed to endow a kisser with the gift of eloquence.
