Essaouira - The Coastal City
The raucous cries of the fluttering sea gulls, an overpowering smell of salted fish, grilled fish and the frenzied action of fishermen hauling their catch, salting, selling, haggling, fixing their nets, baiting hooks and painting their boats - stay etched in your mind as you cross the gates into the main ramparts of Essaouira (pronounced "suwayrah"), a coastal fishing town on the Atlantic.
The three hour driven between Marrakech and Essaouira is filled with experiences - low earthen walls, Argan trees, communes that use those trees to extract oil, mustard, food products, and ultimately a quintessentially Moroccan experience - goats that climb trees!
