Once the home of the ancient Hittites, Cappadocia is characterized by its singular formations in the form of giant cinder cones, hoodoos and fairytale chimneys that were sculpted by the wind out of soft ignimbrite deposits from local volcanic explosions almost 10 million years ago. Caves were carved out of the soft rocks and fashionable hotels fashioned out of them. The spectacular view from our hotel, above, is typical of a visit to the city of Goreme in Cappadocia.
