Rising 1200 feet above the valley, the `Iao needle is a volcanic spine shaped by erosion.

The 'Iao stream, where a furious battle for control was fought by King Kamehameha in 1790. The stream became red with blood and came to be known as "Kipaniwai", meaning "damning of the waters".
