The exquisite Spanish dance form with its roots in Yemeni music, the flamenco is characterized
as much by its singing strains (cantas), expressive sweeping of the arms, rhythmic hand
clapping (palmas), rhythmic feet stomping (zapateado), flamenco guitar strumming (toque)
and sensuous dances (baile), as by the swishing of the gorgeously colored, multitiered
ruffled skirts and the periodic cries of "Ole!" from the exuberant crowds.
