700 meters high above on top of the granite Corcovado mountain, the 30 meter 635 pound statue of Christ the Redeemer watches the city of Rio from a distance with benign outstretched arms.
Made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, the statue is a Rio icon and has been voted one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Thankfully, access to the statue is easy - the first part by cogwheel rail, and then a sequence of elevators/escalators for the weary.
