Journey to Semuc Champey

While Semuc Champey offers a vision of Guatemalan Eden, getting there is no cakewalk!

After all, much of the Guatemalan population travels in cramped trucks, 4x4s or colorful chicken buses

We chartered a car and driver, that took us past blissful coffee plantations, offering a glimpse of Guatemalan countryside

Part of this required us to drive the car onto a winch-operated raft that crossed Rio de la Pasión to the municipality of Sayaxché. The road to Lanquín starts deteriorating shortly after, climbing down the lip of a deep ravine or barranca before we hit a road with enormous bumpy roads.

".. all those weary loops and hairpins of slithering stones going down to the ford and those still wearier loops and hairpins climbing up on the other side.. and at long last, resigning yourself to the inevitable, .. you let yourself be carried, lurch after lurch, down the break-neck descent into the valley." - Aldous Huxley, Beyond Mexique Bay

The last 10km from Lanquín to Semuc was treacherous, with steep drops to one side and ghostly cornfields on the other, inching along at a snail's pace as the road grew incredibly sinuous and pockmarked with potholes, rocks and boulders. Our return from Lanquín to Atitlán, a distance of 180 miles, took us 11 hours by car!

We had to change cars twice, ending up in the back of a 4x4.
